“NOT I”TITLE SEQUENCE

One of my first projects in graphics was the creation of a title sequence. We had to choose between a set list of posdcasts, plays or books. This was mainly because our tutors didn’t want us to be influenced visually by pre existing material. I went with Samuel Beckett’s play ‘Not I’, because it seemed the more interesting out of the list.

The play itself is very text heavy, and even when actually acted there’s no set and only the lips of the actress can be seen because of the spotlight. I thought visually this was an interesting concept and I inicially wanted to produce something inspired by the iconic lips in the ‘Rocky horror show’. However, I felt this was to similar to what the play already does, so I wanted to do something a lit more creative.

My second idea was to have a light bulb spinning around the room, where with each spin text would appear. Even though looking back this was a good idea, my footage wasn’t coming as I wanted so I decided to change stratagies. And thus comes my final idea and the one I ended up producing.

Since the play was very text oriented, with nothing more to the play other than the reciting the text, I decided to create a video with just typography. I was heavily inspired by the title sequence for Gaspar Noé’s ‘Entre the void’, which only used typography as well. I picked a song that also sounded ‘theatrical’ and had strong beats that I could match the text to. Overall, this is one of my favourite projects I’ve done because even though it’s extremely simple I think it hits all the right notes.
