MOTHER BY IDLES

During the workshop we analysed the intensity of the song. I divided the song in 3 parts. The song itself is very high energy, so that was something that I really wanted to translate in my video. At first I was thinking about using B&W film negatives with the lyrics carved out on the negatives, however, after talking to the tutors maybe this idea didn't really represent the song.

"One interpretation of this line [I know nothing/ I'm just sittin' here looking at pretty colours] is it mocks the public for prioritising screen time over knowledge, and staying ignorant of current affairs. It could even be argued that distracting people with TV is one way that the rich maintain their position." (Idles-Mother, Genius).

For my final idea for this project I decided to focus on this line as the main inspiration for the video's visuals. As I said before I think the song can be divided in 3 parts. Throughout the song the singer's voice gets more aggressive and distressed and I wanted the visuals to translate this sentiment. The whole video is supposed to be seen through a "malfunctioning TV", and that's why there's static noise for the whole duration of the video.

For the first part of the song there's a bit of static noise, however, this noise increases as the song progresses, diving into a more psychedelic aesthetic. Close to the end there's a human figure being "hypnotised", to represent this distraction posed by the media.
